New website projects

Yesterday, I tweeted about getting a personal domain name, and today, I have done it. This blog will soon be directed as wendykwan.ca! This is a big step for me as I’ve used singtothesky.org for years and years – and before that, it was au-contraire.org – but hopefully this will be the beginning of where I start branding myself online. Although if I were to be honest, I feel online personal branding can be such an unauthentic way because you have to make sure you publish a professional marketable version of yourself. Hopefully, even with the new domain name, my blog will still be able to represent 100% of me.

I also thought about starting a new (and different) blog yesterday. Now that I have the whole summer ahead of me – the rest of my life too! – I now have the time to start the projects I’ve always wanted to start.

I am a huge fan of East Asian entertainment. I started following Japanese entertainment back in 2005, then Korean entertainment in 2007, and now I’ve started to learn about Chinese entertainment. With Japanese and Korean entertainment, there were plenty of blogs providing news and opinions about the industry, but with Chinese entertainment, there weren’t many. It’s an industry that is still growing, but it’s growing rapidly, and that’s what makes it exciting to follow right now. I’ve wanted a place to dump my thoughts on the Chinese entertainment industry, and since I also want to improve my Chinese reading and writing skills, I want to start a blog where I can do both.

So last night, I brainstormed blog names, researched on available brand names, looked at different WordPress themes, and now I think I’m all set! Just a matter of setting it up and putting together content. It’s been a long time since I started a new website project so hopefully the blog will be successful!

  • Some people are really good at taking sexy selfies. I am not one of those people. In fact, I spent 5 mins of this very selfie photoshoot realizing that I'm balding and then 🙀😭 "crying" over it. #Attractive P.S. Did you know that the Google Pixel camera has a facial retouch feature built in right in its app?! Amazing. Cover up my blackheads please. #Fivehead

  • Went to the @britishlibrary's Harry Potter exhibit today! Super cool to see some of the original manuscripts written by J. K. Rowling. 📖 Did you know that "Fudge" was originally written as a Muggle, and he was to appear in the very first chapter of the entire series? Or that in the second book, Harry and Ron were supposed to crash into the lake and then be rescued by English-speaking merpeople? The coolest thing though, was seeing the full handwritten plan of "Order of the Phoenix" all laid out in four sheets of paper, detailing how each chapter would contribute to the overall prophecy, and how minor characters would show up in the book (e.g. Ginny, Cho, Hagrid, the Order, and Dumbledore's Army). This plan was written way before the first book was even published! J. K. Rowling is a genius! 😍 #BLHarryPotter
  • Almost Christmas! Looking forward to what Christmas is Iike in London. 😊 P.S. Now that iPhone X is out, and we all know how Instagram loooves their iPhones - irrational bias imho - they should really work on improving their photo compression. This quality is unacceptable. 😤
