New website projects

Yesterday, I tweeted about getting a personal domain name, and today, I have done it. This blog will soon be directed as wendykwan.ca! This is a big step for me as I’ve used singtothesky.org for years and years – and before that, it was au-contraire.org – but hopefully this will be the beginning of where I start branding myself online. Although if I were to be honest, I feel online personal branding can be such an unauthentic way because you have to make sure you publish a professional marketable version of yourself. Hopefully, even with the new domain name, my blog will still be able to represent 100% of me.

I also thought about starting a new (and different) blog yesterday. Now that I have the whole summer ahead of me – the rest of my life too! – I now have the time to start the projects I’ve always wanted to start.

I am a huge fan of East Asian entertainment. I started following Japanese entertainment back in 2005, then Korean entertainment in 2007, and now I’ve started to learn about Chinese entertainment. With Japanese and Korean entertainment, there were plenty of blogs providing news and opinions about the industry, but with Chinese entertainment, there weren’t many. It’s an industry that is still growing, but it’s growing rapidly, and that’s what makes it exciting to follow right now. I’ve wanted a place to dump my thoughts on the Chinese entertainment industry, and since I also want to improve my Chinese reading and writing skills, I want to start a blog where I can do both.

So last night, I brainstormed blog names, researched on available brand names, looked at different WordPress themes, and now I think I’m all set! Just a matter of setting it up and putting together content. It’s been a long time since I started a new website project so hopefully the blog will be successful!

I know we're not supposed to pick favourites but can I just say that Rachelle Ann Go (@gorachelleann), Jason Pennycooke (@jasonpennycooke), Tarinn Callender (@tarinncallender), and Jack Butterworth (@butterworthjack) absolutely killed it today. So good! Already want to rewatch it... 😏

  • Had an amazing seafood dinner yesterday, where I tried Norwegian lobsters (langoustines) for the very first time. So delicious and so fresh, the shellfish tasted perfectly seasoned. 🦐 Also had the seafood soup, which was so tasteful as well.

Service here at this restaurant, Sjöbaren, was wonderful too. As a solo female traveller, I don't get much attention from people, but they were so nice to me. They replaced my wine when a fly flew in it, turned away my question at tips, and offered their own water tap when they noticed that my large 1L plastic water bottle was half empty.

Gothenburg, your people are so kind. 🇸🇪
  • This was so cool! What an incredible museum; for 10 NOK, I got to see real viking ships up close. Real viking ships! Three of them in one room! (I left out one of them because it isn't as photogenic. 😅) The live reenactment film that accompanied one of the viking ships was super engaging too. Watching a real reenactment film and listening to a viking-ish soundtrack while standing next to a real viking ship in Oslo, Norway, gave me goosebumps. 😍

As you can tell from these photos, the viking ships are so big in real life, I could barely fit them in one frame! 🌊
