My parents splurged $50 on a houseplant (from IKEA), and you know what they said in their defence? They compared it to me wanting a dog. How does that even work?! We don’t even own a dog. That argument only works if we had a dog, but we don’t… Wait, does this mean they’re OK with me getting a dog now?!

Holiday watchlist workout

Happy holidays! I don’t know what to write, but I feel compelled to publish a post to celebrate the holiday season.

Life has been good. I’ve mainly been at home catching up on my massive film and TV watchlist. If you follow me on Letterboxd or on Trakt, you’ll know that these watchlists are incredibly long. I’ll be pretty busy next year, so I’m trying to get as much crossed off as I can. I’m not a very patient person, so whenever I’m watching a drama that’s dragging on, I just skip over episodes in the middle of the series.

I’ve been watching more Chinese TV dramas lately too. I’m really looking forward to Wallace Chung’s new drama My Sunshine! It premieres next month, and it also stars Tang Yan, who is ridiculously pretty and looks a little similar to Jane Zhang.

Anyhow. Hope everyone is having a good holiday season as well!

Oh, the places you’ll go!

Look at that! Two blog entries in one week! This must be some sort of world record! I kid, I kid… But before I dive into today’s blog, I just wanted to let everyone know – because obviously, my blog sees loads of regular visitors, so that’s why I’m using the word “everyone” – which reminds me that I haven’t set up Google Analytics on this new domain yet – that I reread my previous blog entry and made some edits to it. My blog entries are statistically unproven 99% word vomit, which means I don’t reread or edit my blogs after I click “publish”. Apologies if you’ve noticed any pronounced grammar errors in my past entry!

Anyhow, I met up with two of my longtime friends today, and on my way home, the get-together made me daydream about all the places I wanted to visit in my 20s and 30s.

Eat less, sleep more

I was walking home from the post office today when I thought to myself, “I haven’t blogged in a while, I should write a blog today.” So here I am, blogging.

I have tons and tons of stuff to say about the past month, and I keep procrastinating about it all because there is just so much to talk about! I was in Brazil for two weeks for the World Cup early this month, and because that was my first time on a plane ever (immigrating to Canada from Hong Kong doesn’t count because I was 3-years-old), I have tons to write about. I also visited a couple of Asian night markets here in Toronto the past few weeks. And then there was the fact that I finally – after 7 long years – graduated from my undergraduate studies at Ryerson University. Still loads to talk about, still don’t know where to begin.

But this blog is titled “eat less, sleep more” for a reason.

A time for vacation

It’s late at night, and once again I am crafting a blog. A lot of people attribute these late night thoughts to why they have insomnia – me included. Tonight, I wonder to myself if my past couple of weeks have been a complete waste.

It’s 4AM, but a quick post before I go to sleep. Crazy happy dazzling day.

  • Officially confirmed to graduate. 100% confirmed! I have a convocation date! I have a graduation ceremony!
  • Sat on the Game of Thrones‘ Iron Throne for all of one minute, and just for that one minute, I felt like I was on top of the world. The #GoTExhibit at the TIFF Bell Lightbox was amazing! Thank you to HBO Canada for bringing it to Toronto! For free! Shout out to my friend Abby for inviting me!
  • Went to the Ryerson University Film Festival to support a friend’s contribution to a short film called Gramps, a cute zombie movie. Shout out to Filomena who is by far the most knowledgeable person I know when it comes to beauty products.
  • Ate a late 10:30 PM Korean food dinner. It was all fried ramen and rice cakes, and it’ll make my face puffy in the morning, but it was delicious.

And the extra cherry on top?

  • Came home to watch Toronto FC go into extra time against the Vancouver Whitecaps, and win 5-3 in a penalty shootout to head to the Voyageurs Cup final!

High expectations lead to disappointment

I’ve let so many people down the past two weeks, I don’t even know what to do with myself.

There has got to be a Medium article or a Thought Catalog article I can read to make myself feel better… And more importantly, not let these situations happen again.

Consequences of sleep deprivation

After one night of sleeping less than an ideal seven hours, you are hungrier and more apt to eat more, more likely to get emotional, less focused, and are losing brain tissue.

As a university student, not getting the daily ideal seven hours of sleep is considered normal among your friends. If you were to tell someone that you got eight or nine hours of sleep last night, your friends would stare at you in awe. Eight hours of sleep in your last year of university? Unbelievable.

One of my many New Year’s resolutions this year is to change my sleeping patterns. I’ve been known around my circle of friends as the person who “doesn’t sleep”, but after reading this article, I think it’s about time I’ve changed my sleeping habits. I’ve always known that sleeping late, or not going enough hours of sleep was not healthy, but seeing how my sleeping pattern was affecting my body, displayed so graphically and horrifyingly in the article’s infographic made me want to make a good attempt at changing my habits.

Change won’t happen instantly, I know this, but if I can change my habits even a little bit (like sleeping before 3AM!), I think I can work on changing my sleeping habits altogether.

Returning to the December days

The past month has been really crazy.

But firstly, happy new year! I’ve committed myself to five new year’s resolutions so far, but I won’t be sharing them here just yet! There is too much to document from the month of December! And I think I’ve already started to forget some of the things that happened, so I am relying purely on my Foursquare calendar check-in history to make sure I’ve got all the important points documented.

Instagram

  • It's been an entire week since I landed in Toronto, and I haven't updated my little Instagram photo blog gallery. Lots of wedding preparation stuff have happened so far – my brother's, of course, not me, #SingleLady – but none of them relate to the photo I'm posting today.⁣

I did an epic journey via Uber and train from Canary Wharf, London to Gatwick Airport with three massive luggages and one carry-on on my last morning in the UK. It took me three hours because I had to somehow get all three bags – two of them were overweight, one of which was 31kg – from the second floor of my apartment building to the @AirTransat airline counter. An airline counter that wasn't even in the same terminal as the train station I would be arriving in.⁣

So, from second floor flat, to a 30+ minute Uber to Blackfriars, to the second floor of the Blackfriars train station (by lugging two bags 20 metres, then the other two 40 metres, repeat), to the Gatwick Airport train station, to getting an airport employee to find a trolley for me (by asking him nicely as I stood there waiting by my four bags because lol I'm not going to drag four bags across a busy airport terminal), to somehow pushing my trolley cart onto the inter-terminal train, to finally, reaching the airline counter of #AirTransat.⁣

For three hours, from 6:30 AM, to when I finally had all my bags checked in at 9:15 AM, I was running on pure adrenaline. I don't even know how I was able to do it. I was like a bull on a mission, to get from point A to point B to point C etc. But what I also remember, was my body basically crashing into a damn near anxiety attack while at the counter. I was gulping for air, taking deep breaths, and trying to calm myself down. When I finally walked away from the airline counter, I nearly forgot my carry-on on the trolley, and when I finally had the chance to sit down, my hands were actually shaking. For all the times I've solo travelled around the world in the past year and a half, this has never happened to me before. That morning, I finally understood why airports need therapy dogs.⁣

  • Not the most aesthetic of Instagram photos, but tonight will be my last (out-of-home) dinner in London, so I thought I would make it a very British one: Fish and chips, and a pint of cider on tap. 🍟

Loved the bants about Asian toilets this evening. 😂 Who knew toilets in Asia were so disgusting! Sometimes the only thing they have for you to keep clean is a hose, and apparently it's so dirty, you don't even want to touch it. Then there'sthe used sanitary napkins just lying around the squat holes... 🚽 Never did I imagine that conversation during one of my last meals in the UK would be about dirty toilets. 😂

I will miss my multinational Asian friends: Malaysia, Australia, and the UK. 🗺️

  • Well, since I've been sick all week, might as well put my cabin fever to good use and spend the time to edit and share some of the photos I took on my travels.

First up, a photo of the Kálvin Tér metro station in #Budapest, Hungary. Love the architecture at this station for some reason! So modern. More interesting than majority of the #TTC subway stations back home. Did you know that Budapest has the oldest underground train system on the European continent? 🚇
